The allegations surrounding P Diddy have been some of the most shocking and disturbing news stories for the past several months. Since the first claims were made public, P Diddy has been accused by over 130 individuals of some of the most heinous sex crimes, with the alleged crimes spanning several decades. Following a raid on his properties in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami, P Diddy was formally arrested and charged with two crimes – racketeering and sex trafficking.

Key Takeaways

  • Sex trafficking is a serious problem that affects millions of people worldwide.
  • Survivors of sex trafficking can seek justice and compensation with the help of a sex trafficking attorney.
  • Preventing sex trafficking requires all of us to step in and take action when we witness it take place.

What Is Sex Trafficking?

Sex trafficking is a felony crime where individuals are coerced, manipulated, or otherwise forced into engaging in sexual acts for the profit of traffickers. This exploitation can occur through physical force, deception, the use of drugs, or psychological manipulation, and often involves targeting vulnerable individuals, such as those experiencing economic hardship, homelessness, or substance dependency. Trafficked individuals may be transported across regions or even countries, though trafficking can also happen within a single community.

According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, there were 5,572 reported cases of sex trafficking in 2024 within US borders, though this figure is perceived to be much higher due to how infrequently these cases are reported. The International Labour Organization estimates there to be around 27.6 million people in some form of forced labor worldwide.

Examples of Sex Trafficking

Like many other types of sex crimes, sex trafficking is perpetrated through manipulation, violence, and coercive control to force individuals into dependency and exploitation. Common methods include deception, manipulation of financial needs, social isolation, and threats of harm.

These methods are not usually obvious at first. By the time the survivor realizes they are being trafficked, it is often very hard to report the crime or escape the perpetrator’s control. In the case of a widely-publicized example, Andrew Tate allegedly established romantic relationships with women, promising them financial independence, and persuading them to join him under the guise of genuine affection. In another well-known case (and one in which Edwards Henderson is currently representing the survivors), the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, Jeffries faced allegations of sexual exploitation involving recruitment practices that lured individuals under promises of job opportunities, later exploiting them for sexual services. Both cases (and many others like it) reveal how traffickers may promise financial gain, emotional care, or career advancement to manipulate and control their victims.

Why Is P Diddy Accused Of Sex Trafficking?

The number of individual lawsuits filed against P Diddy has risen to well over 130, with the vast majority of these suits having been filed within the last year. The first of these suits include the 2023 civil suit filed by singer Cassie Ventura, who had an on-and-off relationship with him for over a decade, beginning in 2007 when she was 19 and he was 37. In her suit, Ventura alleged that she was physically and sexually abused as well as trafficked by P Diddy for many years during their relationship. The suit was immediately settled the following day for an undisclosed amount.

Like many other high-profile sexual assault and sex trafficking cases, once one survivor is successful in obtaining justice for their abusers, it is likely for many more to come forward. For over three decades, the accounts of drugs, sexual assault, and sex trafficking that took place at P Diddy’s “freak off” events were considered a known secret by many in the music and film industry. Like Cassie Ventura, many of the claimants (and alleged co-perpetrators) are well-known celebrities or individuals who worked closely with P Diddy and his crew.

In one notable case, Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, a record producer who has collaborated with P Diddy filed a lawsuit against him claiming that P Diddy, Cuba Gooding Jr., and several other members of the alleged P Diddy sex trafficking ring drugged and sexually abused him. He also asserts that he has “irrefutable evidence” that affirms the claims made by many others that P Diddy was involved with the trafficking, drugging, and sexually assaulting minors in multiple states.

What he’s describing is the sex-trafficking of minors,” Edwards Henderson partner Brad Edwards said to Miami Herald, noting Jones could be a witness for federal investigators. “Somebody had to take notice of that. I’m assuming federal investigators are chasing that.”

Another example of a P Diddy sex trafficking case includes a suit filed by Jane Doe on December 6, 2023, alleging that she was trafficked from Michigan as a teenager and gang raped by P Diddy and a Bad Boy Records executive.

On March 25th of this year, P Diddy’s properties were raided following widespread concern about the crimes. In the raid, several illegal weapons and drugs were confiscated including drugs that are commonly used for the explicit purpose of rape – ketamine, GHB, and ecstasy. Also uncovered in the raid were more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant.

What Are the Other Allegations Made Against P Diddy?

On September 16th, P Diddy was arrested and formally charged with sex trafficking and racketeering, but beyond these official charges, he still faces the 130+ civil lawsuits that accuse him of just about every possible combination of despicable crimes including sexual assault, sexual harassment, exploitation of a minor, drugging, physical violence, as well as intimidation and threats. Possibly the most disturbing aspect of these allegations is that many of the alleged survivors claim that P Diddy and his crew distributed video footage of the crimes they committed.

What Could Happen If P Diddy Is Found Guilty of Sex Trafficking and Other Charges?

As of now, the charges P Diddy faces are sex trafficking and racketeering. He was charged with these crimes in New York, but because the alleged crimes also took place in Florida, Georgia, California, and the Virgin Islands, it is likely that he will face charges from multiple states and territories.

The crime of racketeering (which stems from the allegation that P Diddy used his business empire to facilitate physical assault, forced labor, and obstruction of justice) is a federal charge that could come with a minimum prison sentence of 25 years and at least a $5,000 fine. However, if he is found guilty of any crimes in connection with the racketeering that result in penalties higher than 25 years, the racketeering charge may reflect these penalties instead.

While many individuals assume that a person may only be convicted of sex trafficking if they transport their victims, this is far from the only definition of the crime. In New York, sex trafficking is defined as any instance where a person is forced into prostitution by another person or if another person benefits from this forcible prostitution. The various means that this is accomplished, as well as the age of the victim, are all aggravating factors when it comes to sentencing. On its own, sex trafficking in New York carries a minimum of 15 years, but because P Diddy has been accused of drugging and transporting minors across state lines – if convicted, it is likely that he will be sentenced to life in prison.

What Should You Do If You Suspect Sex Trafficking?

One of the most heinous aspects of sex trafficking is that once a person is trafficked, it can be incredibly difficult for them to get help. Many survivors of sex trafficking are kept in captivity for many years simply because they have limited or no contact with other people outside of the perpetrators. If you suspect sex trafficking in your community, you can help in the following ways:

  • Contact Authorities: Call 911 if you believe someone is in immediate danger. For non-emergencies, contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” or “INFO” to 233733 (BEFREE). This hotline is confidential, operates 24/7, and can connect you with local resources.
  • Report to Specialized Agencies: You can report suspected trafficking through Homeland Security by calling 1-866-347-2423 or submitting an anonymous tip online. HSI specializes in investigating trafficking, particularly cases involving movement across state or international borders.
  • Seek Professional Guidance: Various local organizations, shelters, and advocacy groups have trained staff to provide support to human trafficking survivors and can advise on how to assist safely. If you have experienced sex trafficking, you should consider consulting a sex trafficking lawyer for help and guidance.

Filing a Sex Trafficking Lawsuit: Pros and Cons

If you are a sex trafficking survivor, you might have experienced a total loss of physical, financial, and sexual autonomy and control over your life. A sex trafficking lawsuit filed in a civil court can help you reclaim the power and claim compensation for medical expenses, therapeutic costs, compensation for pain and suffering, and more. Many survivors feel that a lawsuit helps them move forward with their lives, after having been ripped off of their dignity, bodily autonomy, and independence. A successful lawsuit works to prevent the perpetrator from hurting others as well.

However, it is important to bear in mind that a sex trafficking case is difficult. There is almost always a high level of public scrutiny and media attention, which can be a hard thing for survivors who might be dealing with feelings of anxiety, anger, fear, and/or humiliation due to the crime. Furthermore, lawsuits involving sex crimes can be emotionally draining and can take years to resolve with no guarantee of success.

While all high-profile sex trafficking cases will have their drawbacks, with the right sex trafficking lawyer, they can be mitigated significantly. A sex trafficking attorney with experience working in these types of cases will know what to expect from the legal process and will know how to prepare and execute the right strategy for your case so that you are ready to fight.

Tips For Survivors of Sex Trafficking

If you have experienced a sex crime, it can be hard to know how to start healing and moving forward. Processing sexual abuse can take time, but there are resources that can help you recover and take back control of your life:

  • Seek Trusted People for Support: It can be empowering for survivors to connect with people they trust, like family members, friends, or support group members. Confiding in others can reduce isolation, build a support network, and provide emotional strength during recovery.
  • Seek Therapy and Counseling: Professional counseling or therapy, especially trauma-informed care, can help survivors process experiences in a safe environment. Therapists specializing in trauma, PTSD, or human trafficking provide coping tools to manage emotions and regain a sense of stability.
  • Consider Filing a Lawsuit with a Qualified Attorney: Working with a skilled sex trafficking attorney can help survivors regain control over their lives. Filing a lawsuit not only provides a path for justice but also holds traffickers accountable, potentially securing financial resources for continued medical care and other support.
  • Practice Self-Care and Rebuild a Routine: Self-care activities, such as exercise, journaling, or creative outlets, can provide emotional relief and help rebuild personal routines. This process can boost self-confidence and improve mental well-being.
